Blog Reflection: Art Criticism Article

I reviewed "Nature of the World", "Art Exhibit: Food" and "The Queen City". I chose the "Nature of the World" exhibit because of the interesting sub theme that was exposed in addition to the nature them. I like looking at my peer's work to see how their minds work but I did not like the fact that I had to openly criticize certain aspects that I probably didn't like about the exhibit. I wouldn't mind reading the critique on my exhibit to see what I need to improve on. I would rate my article an 8 out of 10 because the flaw I brought up in the article could destroy the flow of the exhibit if altered. Working on this project was a learning experience and I enjoyed it.

I chose each of the inspirational pieces to show that there are multiple ways of showing a self portrait through art.  All three of them had great detail on the face and showed emotion in the pieces of artwork. These pieces came from the Brooklyn ArtProject.  I used the PaperArtist application on my phone to create the self portrait. This form of media made it easy to create portrait and I didn’t run into any difficulty. The piece represents me and shows my facial features as well. Value was used with the contrast between the color of my face and the color of my hair. It was also was used to create shades of white on the shirt. I enjoyed doing the piece of art because the application made create the paint texture by moving my hand across the screen and the photo will change. I believe the final artwork is nice and the form of media used to make it was enjoyable.

EXTRA CREDIT BLOG

1.  I enjoyed working on the art exhibition project  a lot because I thought that project was the easiest once you were capable of figuring out a theme. The ArtSTOR application was also helpful due to the information page that was needed for the PowerPoint slides.

2. I  enjoyed working the least on the mask assignment because I just felt that the image I had in mind was never able to be realized into reality. In addition it felt slightly childish just making a mask most of the day.

3. I like using angel, I understand angel more now after taking an online course than I thought I ever would. It is much easier to use than I thought. I really liked how organized everything was, and I knew when everything was due. I could also get ahead certain times if I wanted to or had time to.

4.I would keep the extra credit opportunities, such as this one. I wouldn't add anymore extra credits because the students who don't do their work shouldn't get the opportunity to get their points back for skipping an assignment. I think you offer the right amount of extra credit for students who didn't do so well on an assignment and can get their points back for that reason. I would also keep, where you offer students to turn in work late with permission. Some professors refuse to offer that regardless the situation and I think that is wrong because students go through hard times and sometimes they have trouble completing all the work.

5. Yes I would definitely recommend this course to my peers, if you have the time and can keep on track with turning things in on time, I would say its definitely worth it.

Reflections of AED 200

1. My expectations for this course were to learn some things that I have not yet learned about art such as the history and background of art. These expectations were definitely met. I have learned about how cultures have different art.  I  was also exposed to themes and styles that I never knew were involved in the arts.

2. After being through this course, I still would have my definition of art; to take your feelings and put them onto paper. In addition art would be a way to record events in history without simply just writing them down.

3. In my original posting I chose Andy Worhol because I  knew his famous quote . After this course, I would still say the same person because I realized that he is famous for more than just a quote such as the artwork where he used the Campbell noodle soup cans together.

4.This was my fourth online course, I will say it is a lot of work but I enjoyed it as long as I didn't have to create an artwork myself. I enjoyed being able to work around my schedule and completing things when it best suited me. I am glad I took this course and succeeded at it. I think it made me more organized and made me pay more attention to when things were due and I had to plan accordingly.

Module 15: Video Review

1.  In the video "The Colonial Encounter: View of Non-Western Art and Culture" I learned that 1900s Paris worlds fair was the largest world fair with over ran for 8 months with over 50 million visitors that exposed the underlying nationalism of the event, half the area was devoted to French imperialism while the rest represented other nations' colonies, three figures from the fair represent three kings of the 19th century and they remain on exhibit today. In the video "Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation" I learned that both regard Jackson Pollock as a major modern master, this conversation took place in National gallery of art in Washington, this film is the two men T.J Clark and Michael Fried giving their own thought objective description, analysis and interpretation on Pollocks work and Clarks emphasis is on the historical role of modern art while Fried is focused on the independence of its aesthetic.

2. The film "The Colonial Encounter: View of Non-Western Art and Culture," relates to our project, because the worlds fair is an exhibit of art pieces from across the world. The film "Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation," relates to our project, because the men are giving an art criticism of the Pollocks work just as we did for each piece in our exhibition.

3. The film "The Colonial Encounter: View of Non-Western Art and Culture," goes in depth and talks about the important piece of the worlds fair. I found this video interesting because I have never even heard of the worlds fair before watching this. The film "Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation," goes into depth on Pollocks piece, and talks about every detail. Helping you clearly understand how to arrive at an objective description, analysis, and interpretation of a work of art.

Project #4 - Art Curation Exhibit

I enjoyed the project  because I am good with PowerPoint, making slideshows, and because I enjoy doing it. It surprised me that it took up a lot of time to complete the project because it didn't seem difficult just required good research. I personally didnt believe but it was difficult like the mask project because we didn't have to make any artwork ourselves. It didn't take me too long to come up with a theme because the sacred realm always interested me. Selecting which photos to use was a process due to the ArtStor database tended to show some artworks that were straying away from the keyword. Thankfully the ArtStor database had a great information page that gave me all necessary information needed for the slides. Overall I am glad to finally complete the project, and I am looking forward to what themes my peers decide to choose as well.

Module 13 & 14: Video Review

1. The first video I learned about what low brow art is based off of many different things from tattooing to porn, and how it’s more of a culture than anything else and that it was formed to spite the snobby art culture. The second video I learned that in the Tate museum and how art is set up there. It also explained how art should be set up by movements and the past to the present. I found the third video really interesting because I knew nothing about the laws regarding archaeology or any Native American burial grounds and how upset that this must of made Native Americans feel. In the 4th video I found it interesting that it has to go through a series of people to then be placed in the gallery.

2. The first video did noy relates to my project because the theme I chose was the sacred realm and the video was about surrealism. The second video just made me keep in mind that I should maybe see how during different time periods how view changes within the population. The third video might relate to my project in looking at history around the works I chose and how it might of made people feel or be attached to cultures. I think this helps with my project in the sense that what will people think of the works will it actually fit, and I can also choose pieces I like or think tie in with my project.

3. I really liked all the films; I felt that they gave me a better understanding about different types of art and how they were formed. I felt it helped me learn more about how art galleries are set up and why.

Art Gallery Visit#2

Step 1:
1. The title of the exhibition is John Singer Sargent Watercolors
2. The theme of the exhibit is watercolor paintings created by John Singer Sargent.

Step 2:

1. There were white fluorescent lights in the exhibit room.
2. The exhibit room had white walls
3. No special objects in terms of architecture were in the room regarding the exhibit. The pillars had signs just to keep the viewers to flow in right direction to see all ninety three paintings.
4. In the gallery space the movement of the viewer is generally meant for you to look at the paintings from left to right.

Step 3:

1. The artworks are organized on the wall so that they can be viewed from left to right and that all of your attention can remain on piece of art at a time.
2. The artworks are similar due to the fact that they all have the same common theme which is watercolor.
3. The artworks are different due to the fact some of them are darker and have a great contrast. In addition, the paintings were either of people or structures.
4. The artworks were framed with gold borders.
5. The artworks were labeled and indentified with a name card being placed beneath each piece of art.
6. Each painting was about four to five feet away from each other so you can focus on each independently.

Module 12: Video Review

1. I chose the  Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50’s and 60’s  because I wanted to know more information about these eras since they happen to be not too long ago.  I chose Uncertainty: Modernity and Art because I thought it was interesting how culture and ideas change because of art and different time periods and the title alone was capable of grabbing my attention.

2. One concept I learned was abstract art is usually the feeling of the tile, also that it defies the proper elements of art, it is pure expression, and is meant for the viewer to look at the title then the work and think of it as emotion or memory. I learned from the second video that art and invoke emotions and cultural changes and this works both ways, that cultural changes can change art, and its hard to predict what the change will be and when.

3. I think the videos related to the book because it talks about the major concepts, but goes into more detail and more examples of the types of art. Videos also helped show artists and art from that certain time period.

4.  I thought the films were interesting, I felt that they created a more in-depth explanation than the book did. The videos has better examples to explain the topic that the textbook to survey the information

Module 11: Video Review

1. I selected the video about Matisse because I was interested in their creative process of making paintings. I chose Dada and Surrealism because I was interested in the movements that defined modernism in the 20th century.

2. I found it interesting that Matisse believed drawing and painting were the exact same process. In addition, it was interesting that Schwitters made his art in the 1920’s but became popular in the 1950s with the Dada movement. Schwitters did not want to be associated with artists, and wanted to create a different world from the old one.

3. These movies related to the text in the sense that they showed similar work but did a more in-depth explanation and created a better understanding for the viewer. I felt like the second video did a good representation of how Dada art was represented and the art that was made up  during this movement.

4. I felt that the videos were interesting and gave a more in depth view of people and concepts in these videos. It was intriguing that they showed Matisse actually creating a painting. I thought the second movie showed a lot of good examples and techniques that related to the readings as well.

Art Making/Material Exploration Blog: Mask Making

1. The three inspiration pieces were chosen because they were all had great relevancy in my childhood. The first mask from the left is one of the Jason masks from the Friday the 13 horror movies. The second mask is from the wrestler Kane who was of the most notable wrestlers in the late 90s and early 2000s due to the mask. The last mask is from the movie The Mask which starred Jim Carrey, this one of my personal favorite movies of my childhood.

2. The Jason mask contains a lot of circles making it evident that the element which is shape is present on the mask. Emphasis of the mask being worn out and scratched gives it more of terrifying impression. The Kane mask has red and black lines alternating diagonally from the top to the bottom of the mask. The red and black contrast gives a strong impression to the eyes of the viewer. The Jim Carrey mask lines going across it from the top to the bottom and the texture allows the lines to be deeply engrained into the mask.

4. My mask contained shapes, balance and lines. The mask is perfectly symmetrical allowing there to be balance on it. The lines in the blue triangles direct the viewer’s eyes to the center of the mask. The bottom piece of the mask is a group of circle of dots that happen to make a triangle over the mouth.

5.  My finished mask didn’t come out exactly like I planned. I personally thought the mask looked better in 2D form than the 3D form. I added tissue between the mask and support paper behind it but it seemed to still lack a strong 3D presence overall.

Art Making/Material Exploration Drawings - Exploring Line

1. It was interesting using my hand as a subject matter because I began to analyze parts of my hand that I normally pay attention to..

2. I chose a pencil due to the fact that was the only tool I had at my disposal. I think the pencil would be better than charcoal because of all the miniature details on a hand.

3. It was hard using my hand as a subject matter due to the fact that I simply needed it to draw. My method was to just to stare at a finger long enough and try to memorize it as I was drawing.

4. I don’t think my drawings are successful due to the fact that they are lacking some similarities with my actual hands.

5. I wouldn't consider using my non-dominate hand unless I was probably making some type of abstract art. The hand tended to swerve a lot and made it difficult to make borders and introspective details.

Module 10: Video Review

1 .I chose the Buddhism video because I was interested to know more about the culture and why it is so popular. I chose the second video because I was interested to know more about African Art.

2. I learned that the carvings in the stone are actually Buddha’s teachings. I learned that African Art went along with the times, in the sense that when it was a hunting and gathering society you see the cave paintings depicting that, then when it turned into an agricultural society you see that as well in the art, also when there tools became more advanced and their culture richer, so did there art. There art was used to record information as well

   3.   I feel the first video relates to the readings because it really shows how and why Buddha was such an iconic figure. It goes more in-depth with the culture and what the values are and how they are displayed through art. I feel the African art video related to the text in showing how there art started, and how it went along with their culture.

4. In my opinion I feel that the movies were really good it makes it more interesting to read and then watch a movie and find out more information, and more about the two topics. I also like that I was able to know more about who Buddha really was as a person. I thought the second  video gave me a better understand of techniques and how you could distinctly tell what kind of animals they saw in Africa, and how they lived there daily life.

Module 9: Video Review

1. I chose the video of the drawing of Michelangelo, because I was interested to know more about his life and why in our culture we  look up to him as one of the most influential artists throughout history.     I chose the movie about Velasquez because I thought it would be interesting to learn more about him.

2. The concept I learned was that his distribution of weight and his strokes are truly an art form. I liked when the woman tried to keep recreating his work but couldn't it shows that his techniques truly were creative and difficult.I learned that his paintings were massive, and that he did things in a specific way, he liked to do the placement of persons by their ranking of importance. Learned that Velasquez was a quart painter to Phillip IV and wanted to guide the eye of the beholder instead of trying to imitate nature.

3.I feel the video related to the text because it mentions a lot of things the book does, like the way Michaelangelo used draping with cloths, but that you were still able to see the figure he created underneath.

4.I feel that this film was interesting; that it goes more in-depth than the text because you find out where he learned his techniques and that he didn't even want to be associated with the man he learned him from. It was also interesting to see other people’s opinions and the break down of his works. I also felt like with the second movie having more examples of his work better understands the artist.

Module 8: Video Review

1   1. I chose the video Cairo Museum because I have always been interested in Egyptian history due to their background of historic pharaohs, Cleopatra, pyramids and their impressive boobie traps made in their tombs. I know that the Cairo Museum is most likely a great landmark in Egypt, so I wanted to see if there was more to learn about it. Especially since Cairo is the capital of Egypt I knew a lot of important artifacts had to be in the museum.

2. From the video “More Human Than Human” the key concepts that I learned about were that images dominate our lives. Even back thousands of year’s people have been obsessed with images of the human body. The Venus of Willendorf is a great example the video uses, the artist of that figures focuses their attention on the breasts and the stomach, emphasizing them, but at the same time the artist barely shows the head and arms. The video Cairo Museum I found out a lot of key concepts that I didn’t know about Egyptian history that was very interesting. I found out that there are still artifacts that people have found over 100 years ago that have not been opened. Another interesting thing I saw in the video was that the ancient Egyptian’s performed plastic surgery, even back then, because they wanted people to be comfortable in the afterlife.

3 3.The videos relate to the readings in the text because both, the videos and the text, talk about the ancient worlds. Chapter 14 focuses on the oldest art, Greek art, and ancient Egypt; this ties into the videos, Cairo Museum, and “More Human than Human”.

4 4. The Cairo Museum intrigued me greatly due the fact that there is countless amount of artifacts that have been discovered.  There are still many artifacts that have been opened and possibly others that will never be found by archaeologist

Module 7- Video Review

1. Imperial Rome, Ostia, and Portus: Ancient Architecture and Technology
I knew Rome  was well known for their architecture but I didn’t know that the geographic setting was very important to them. The key concept that I learned in this video was that the Servian and Aurelianic Walls were very important to the safety of the city. Not only did they use engineering advancements for their walls but with the invention of the aqueducts this added more of a water supply to the city. Another key concept I learned was the meaning of Pantheon, it means dedicated to all the gods.
 Architecture: The Science of Design
The key concept that I learned in this video was the reinforced and pre-stressed concrete strength and use. I didn’t know that there were different types of concrete, I thought that all concrete was the same, but there are different types of concrete for different uses.  It was also interesting that reinforced and pre-stressed concrete where used to make the Olympic stadium in Montreal, Canada.  A poorly built skyscraper can make one go through motion sickness and damages to building or elevators during high winds.

2. The videos relate to the readings in the text because both the videos and the readings talk about architecture in general. The videos help give an in-depth description of architecture compared to the textbook. Both the readings and the video describe the importance of architecture and how the Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks had a major influence on modern architecture.

3.   I thought that the films helped expose me to all different types of architecture there is in the world. The visuals from the videos help explain certain concepts that probably weren’t as clear when you were reading it from the textbook. Overall the two films held my interest and were very informative.

4. I chose the film Imperial Rome, Ostia, and Portus: Ancient Architecture and Technology because of my prior knowledge in Roman architecture and I chose Architecture: The Science of Design because science will always interest me.

Reviewing Peer Responses to Artwork

1.http://kubikbblog.blogspot.com/
  http://artfullyblog.blogspot.com

2. I did agree with the elements and principles listed for the images and some images did have other elements and principles in the them. Brian and Diana had  some interesting images for multiple elements and some pictures were capable of representing multiple elements and principles such as Diana’s unity picture.

3. There were no images in my peer’s blogs that were the same as mine due to the fact that I couldn’t go to the recommended art gallery site. Their decisions for choosing the artworks were the same because we chose them any pieces that we found intriguing and appealing to our own eyes.

4. Acrylic and pencil on canvas and acrylic on wall was a great example of balance and I appreciated how it was capable of controlling my eye movement which came from Diane’s selection. Batuz; No. 131; 1982 dyed pulp on board is my favorite piece from Brian’s selection. I'm in awe with the blue pieces dissected by the black jagged line going through the piece. The brown background cooperates with all the parts of the painting as well.

5. I found this to be valuable to my learning experience because it gives you a better whole understanding and it opens your mind to alternatives that you may never have considered. Peer review helped us get expose to even more artwork besides what we see in the textbook or our personal environment.

6. I found the comments helpful because they helped me to see what people thought of my work. All the comment were insightful and they showed an overall appreciation for art.

Blog: Video Review

1. The Eyes of the Sculptor

The full process that goes into creating a sculpture.
Determine the use of a rock by knocking on the stone.
The sound indicates whether the stone is solid or has a crack
Many sculptures take form in marble, clay, and stone.

  Glass and Ceramics
Glass blowing and stained glass windows are the two traditional glass-making techniques.
Glass is made from sand that is set on fire with other components.
The creation of a glass cup itself takes a lot of firing twisting and turning.

 Installation Art
Installation of art, is anything that takes up space and defines the space.
It’s one of the most popular things to do and it all depends on what the artist wants to do.

2 .  I felt that the readings from the textbook related to the videos and gave me a brief idea of the topics I would be learning about in the video. Then the video gave more in-depth information of each topic. In example, the textbook talked about the different materials used when making a sculpture in the video I got to see those exact materials used however, through the video I got to see what it looks like the title it has during the process of making a piece of work.

3.
I felt that the first two films “Through the Eyes of the Sculptor” and “Glass and Ceramics” were the most interesting because the videos were able to grab my attention. I also felt that those two videos were had a lot content in it as well. On the other hand, the last video wasn't intriguing and less amusing in comparison to the other two videos. Overall, these videos add depth to my understanding because I get to see how the tools described in the textbook are used.

Art Gallery Visit#1

1. The painting “orangeskydetail” made an impact on me because the inverse color scheme forced my mind to think of how blind people will probably envision a city landscape. “Brooklyn Street Art Dumbo 1401” had an impact on me as well due to the fact that I normally wouldn’t consider graffiti on the wall as art. New York City has graffiti on nearly every other block and especially on the subways but I never took it as piece of art.

2. I made a connection to the “%” piece because it depicts how African Americans are quickly populating United States prison. Growing up I was told that odds were always against me to be successful so the piece to me was an aid to remain on the path that my parents have setup for me. “maninahoundstoothsuit” made me think of when I was learning how to tie a tie. Honestly I still have problems at this task so I usually end up looking at tutorials on Youtube.

3. I wanted to know more about the photo “ Kem`” because the waves looked so calm and intrigued me to wanting to know the location. Obviously the photo had to be taken at sea and I would like to know what measures were taken to get the picture as it is. “10 Left Handed Scissors Cut the Water like Sharks” was an interesting piece of art. I wanted to know if the perforated woman is suppose to be the perfect women and why are there more than 10 scissors in the painting.

Logo Design

1. While creating my logo I thought about my personality, the meaning of my family to me in regards to my last name.

2. The main proportion of the logo is compact disc but due the interior designs you can also interpret it as a globe as well.  The blue waves on the left show that I have calm personality with a capital “C” in relation to my first name .On the right side the red grid is made to show how I am protective of my family.

3. The most important discovery I made during the creation of the logo was that its easier just to pick up a pencil and doodle to create some ideas instead of brainstorming before I begin to create the logo.

4. “A good logo is like setting the foundation stone for a good brand career.” I don’t find this to be true because the Nike trademark swoosh logo is very simplistic and boring yet they are capable of intriguing many customers for all these years.  My opinion on the videos is that there isn't always a need to change a trademark or logo. According to the saying “If it isn't broke don’t fix it” classical things are better left as is.

Elements & Principle

Due to my parent’s admiration for art, I was able to use many paintings they had hanging around for the project. I didn't want all the pictures to become repetitive so I began to look for objects in my house instead of paintings.  This helped me pay attention to certain objects in my home that I happen to walk by every day. For example, the elephant sculpture that  was used for the texture element, is an object that’s has been on the television stand for the longest but this week is the first time that  I paid it any thoughtful attention.

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

1. Color would be the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the reflected light. These qualities tend to have an effect on our emotions every day. It’s the reasoning behind why we tend to situate colors to certain events. How color effects emotions would be in the painting by Van Gogh where he describes the place where he was staying. In the video it was stated that he used abnormal colors in the painting to show how he hated the place.

2. The theoretical aspect of color that fascinates me would be how the artist used the color red to show hatred for the subject that they are portraying. The color video showed two artists who used red to display how they hated several different locations.

3. In the color video the biggest impact in regards to color would be how June’s emotions were affected by the slightest colors being off.  In example, when she was painting the boat and it came out too blue she started getting frustrated. She ended up wiping the blue off and mixing black with it until she gained the proper color composition of her liking. It was surprising that a hue of a certain color would make someone react the way she did it shows that different colors spark different emotions in a person.

4. In the feelings video what made an impact on me with color and how it affected emotions would be how Jacques-Louis David used colors and facial expression to show their views on what was going on in the world around them. David painted with bright colors and his paintings were of triumph and people trying to accomplish something. It was interesting that his painting, Death of Marat, helped cause a change in civilization and sway the people of France to a certain mindset.

Aesthetics

1. Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts
3 Unities-  Place, Action, Time
Aesthetics was disregarded during the middle ages
Art lies between sensitivity and reason
Kant- Aesthetics can’t be contained by natural or moral law
CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aesthetics
Human brain takes 15 years to completely analyze objects
Cortex is activated when brain is introduced to new image
Consensus partum- the universal search for harmony
Animals are a form of art
What the brain draws from: Art and neuroscience
Babies prefer face like patterns
Brain looks for faces in art
Human visual system is specialized for small detailed things
Luminance and color are important in creating illusions.

2. I believe that Aristotle’s theory on aesthetics is important. Plato came from Ancient Greece and is from the ancient philosophy era (4th Century B.C.).  Plato’s contribution to the aesthetics theory is shown thorough the quote “There is a beauty by which all things are beautiful.” Plato basically explains that everyone has their own standard of beauty so that there will a consensus feeling towards a work of art.

3. Changeux and Ramachandran’s scientific view brought up very intriguing reasoning. They spoke of the human body and artifacts in regard to art. To them there was no limit to exactly what could be labeled as art. The eight laws of art helped created a scientific structure to analyze art. Learning that the cortex is activated when the brain is introduced to a new image was very intriguing to me.

4. Both the videos and the text relate by mentioning different aspects of art history. Whether they are referring to famous philosophers or the being that happen to create the first sketch, art has proven to be a part of the society since the beginning of time. All of the sources help express the views of the artists and help contributed to meaning of the term aesthetics

5. I felt that article help me make to the connection to present day art. The reference to emoticons used during texting as form of art was never a possibility to me until after I read that article. The films helped me learn how the brain interacts to art and how many famous philosophers had their own personal views of art throughout time. Those sources added depth to the textbook reading by creating more of a link between art and the reader. Today nearly everyone uses emoticons and I know personally its always interesting to learn about my brain.

Setting up my blog

I didn't need to setup a Gmail account because I had a couple of accounts for prior uses. Setting up the blog was simple once I finally made a decision on a blog title. Hopefully this course broadens my knowledge upon art and gives me a better appreciation for it. I like taking online courses due to the fact the schedule is flexible and molds to your own needs.
